Est. victims: 600k+ in civil war

Bashar al-Assad was an ophthalmologist in London when his brother Basil, the designated heir, died in 1994. He returned to Syria and was groomed as successor. After his father Hafez died in 2000, he became president. Initial hopes for reform faded; he inherited a police state and reinforced it. The 2011 uprising was met with brutal repression, igniting a civil war.
