Rahmon (né Rahmonov) rose from collective farm boss to head of state during Tajikistan's 1992–1997 civil war, which killed an estimated 150,000. He consolidated power, banned the main opposition party (IRPT) in 2015, and has ruled for over 30 years. He renamed himself Rahmon and promoted a cult of personality; his son is being groomed as successor.
